Exterior Boat Maintenance

Check the Hull

If your yacht or motorboat has been stored on the hard for the winter, it is an ideal opportunity for a diligent hull check, including the keel, skeg and rudder, before the boat is re-launched. Check for any abrasions, scratches, or gouges, and repair them, and check around through-hull fittings, especially around the rudder. Ancasta Yacht Services can help with a variety of care services for a professional finish, including antifouling, hull polishing, teak cleaning, and anode replacement.

  • Check for and repair damage to the hull, keel, skeg and rudder(s)
  • Check all hull fittings
  • Apply fresh antifoul paint
  • Replace anodes

Clean the Decks

Wherever your boat has been stored over the winter months, you’ll likely need to carry out a detailed exterior clean. If doing this yourself, make sure drains and scuppers are clear, and use the marine-specific cleaning products for each area e.g. a mild detergent for the hull, a good polish for metalwork, and check the seals as you clean around windows. Teak decks will require extra care but even weathered and faded teak can be rejuvenated with the correct valeting solutions and cleaning methods from the experts.

  • Clear drains and scupers
  • Polish metalwork
  • Check window seals
  • Clean and/or restore decking

Inspect Deck Hardware

On deck, carry out a bow to stern appraisal of the deckware. Look at the integrity of the stanchions, pulpits, and lifelines, well as the chain plates and cleats. Inspect your anchor system and clean and grease all winches. Leak test your hatches and portlights. Any repairs or replacements are likely to be best carried out before the season commences to minimise downtime and maximise sailing time – Ancasta Yacht Services is an approved Lewmar Gold Installer, Service and Repair Centre with Lewmar-trained technicians onsite at our Hamble workshop.

  • Check stanchions, pulpits, lifelines, chain plates and cleats for damage or wear
  • Service all winches
  • Leak test hatches

Restore Sails and Canvas Covers

Canvas on deck, including sail covers, biminis, and dodgers, will likely need a good clean if they have been exposed to the elements over the winter. As part of laying up, sails should have been removed and laundered, but at the very least, these should be checked for wear and chafe ahead of your first sail of the season.

  • Clean boat covers and/or biminis
  • Launder the sails and check for wear

Rig Check

Rig inspections are essential to maintaining your sailing yacht’s safety and performance – rig failures can be costly, dangerous to your crew and may cause damage to your boat and others. By identifying weak spots and having the rig professionally repaired before it breaks, mast failure can usually be avoided.

Most yacht insurance policies also require that your rigging is in a fit and seaworthy condition, so it’s essential to ensure your mast and standing rigging are always safe and secure.

We recommend that a professional rigger carry out a pre-season rig check periodically. But here are a few things you can check yourself to help prevent problems. This list is not exhaustive, but it covers a few of the basics. Always seek professional advice should you uncover any concerns.

  • Check that split pins and rings aren’t missing or uncoiling
  • Test shackles to make sure they are locked and seized
  • Inspect wire rigging for wear and tear or signs of breakage
  • Ensure guard wires are secure and not bent or worn

Engine Servicing

Ancasta Yacht Services’ in-house marine engineering team are Approved Dealers and Service Agents for Yanmar and Nanni diesel engines offering peace of mind and a cost-effective solution if you would prefer to leave your engine service to the professionals.

To maximise performance, regular engine servicing is vital and a typical maintenance schedule would be to carry out a service at typical intervals of 50 hours, 250 hours, 500 hours, and 750 hours.

At AYS, our Yanmar engine service includes:

  • A thorough visual inspection
  • General clean
  • Oil and oil filter replacement
  • Gearbox oil level check
  • Assessment of the air filters, v-belt, impeller, and anode

You’ll want to check your onboard inventory of engine spares, making sure you have key items like fuel and oil filters, impellors, coolant, and engine oil (safely stowed to avoid leakage). It is also important details are recorded in the engine maintenance log, especially the date and hours of the last oil changes.

Electrical Systems

Check Electrical Components

You rely on your boat’s electrical system to run lights, electronics, appliances, pumps, and gauges, so annual servicing is critical to ensure your comfort and safety for the sailing season ahead. As part of your Spring boat maintenance programme, a thorough check of all electrical components on board should be carried out to ensure they are clean, tight, corrosion-free connections and all wiring inspected for wear and chafe. Check shore power and battery power, and your spares inventory for bulbs and fuses – don’t forget your navigation lights!

Install New Technology

If your Christmas list included some new tech toys for the boat, ensure these are wired into the boat’s systems correctly and update any software to fix bugs. If you are considering adding more appliances to an existing setup, speak to a qualified marine electrician to understand the implications on your power usage, particularly if bluewater cruising is in your plans and you are likely to be using power-hungry items away from shore facilities.

At Ancasta Yacht Services, our extensive experience in the installation and servicing of generators and power management systems means we can handle complex bespoke systems as well as “off the shelf” configurations.

Interior Valet

Deep Clean

Even the best-winterised boat cabin can get a bit stale if not used for several months, so the first step is to open it up and air it out. A professional interior valet can breathe new life into the living spaces, best done before you start re-stocking the galley and returning items you may have removed over the winter.

Service Heads

Service the heads, check the plumbing, and clean heavy-use items such as the oven. Freshwater systems should be recommissioned and you may choose to leave this job to the professionals to flush lines thoroughly and reconnect pumps on board.

Safety Equipment

Safety Kit Servicing

Most types of safety equipment, including liferafts, lifejackets, EPIRBS, and hydrostatic MOB equipment, will require regular servicing, so make sure everything is up to date prior to the season getting underway. Ancasta Yacht Services can arrange for items to be collected from your boat and delivered to Ocean Safety partners for servicing, and then returned.

Check Flares

For items with a limited lifespan, such as flares, check these have not expired, and, if they have, dispose of them safely and replace them accordingly.

Plan Ahead

One of the most common and costly mistakes yacht owners make is carrying out or booking essential maintenance and recommissioning work too late.

As spring approaches, boatyards, engineers, and service teams quickly become busy, leading to limited availability, delays, and, in some cases, rushed work.

Planning ahead not only ensures your yacht is ready when you want it but also allows time to address any unexpected issues properly.

Guideline timings:

  • Routine engine servicing – 1–2 days
  • Antifouling and hull preparation – 1–2 weeks depending on the hull condition, weather, and drying times.
  • Full recommissioning including systems checks, safety inspections, and any remedial work – 1–3 weeks
  • Unexpected repairs or replacements – 1-4 weeks

By scheduling work during the winter months or early spring, you’ll benefit from greater flexibility, better access to preferred contractors, and a more relaxed timeframe to complete jobs thoroughly.

It also means your yacht will be ready to go as soon as conditions improve, rather than wasting time waiting in a queue during perfect sailing days.
